When you think of the word “makeup,” what comes to mind? If the first thing that comes to mind is lipstick, eyeshadow, or contour, you’re not wrong. When you think of makeup, skincare is not always top of mind. Believe it or not, skincare is crucial for a flawless makeup application.
Having a skincare regimen is important not only before applying makeup, but also taking it all off at the end of night (we mean makeup of course!). Here are some tips that will turn your beautiful canvas of a face into a masterpiece!
First things first, you have to wash your face. It sounds like a no-brainer but you need to wash your face to clear the buildup on your skin after having your beauty sleep. Make sure to find a cleanser that is suitable for your skin type. Using a facial cleanser that isn’t for your skin type can result in breakouts.
Smooth, gorgeous skin is only possible with exfoliation. Exfoliating can improve your skin’s health by brushing away dead skin and debris. It also helps the other products in your skincare routine to improve their efficacy. However, there is a right way to exfoliate and a wrong way to exfoliate.
You want something that works really well without causing damage or irritation to the skin. Aquareveal’s Satin Bright Soft Water Peel for Face is ideal for all skin types because it knows exactly how much exfoliation your skin needs. This unique exfoliator is water-based and does not contain any irritating acids, scrubs or enzymes to do the job. It works like magic to take away dead skin while revealing soft, smooth, and glowing skin.
3) TONERS / ESSENCES
The next part of the skincare regimen you want to focus on is using a toner to rebalance your skin and prep it for moisturizers or serums. Toners clarify the skin’s surface by taking away any excess oils, dirt, and perhaps makeup from the night before (we won’t tell anyone). Essences deliver actives into the skin and help prepare it for other skincare products.
4) SERUMS / MOISTURIZERS
Last, but not least, moisturize! It doesn’t matter what your skin type is, everyone needs to moisturize their skin. Even if you have oily skin, you have to use a moisturizer. Not moisturizing your skin does more damage than good. Not doing so creates dull and flaky skin, causes wrinkles, makes acne worse, and it affects the performance of your makeup (hence the title).
5) PRIMERS & SPF
Even if your makeup contains SPF, our opinion is you still need SPF as the final step of your skincare regimen before makeup. Relying on makeup or finishing sprays with SPF are fine for touch-ups does not ensure the full protection you need to take care of your skin long term.
We recommend many of the light, milky formulations that glide onto skin easily - they are ideal under makeup because of the thin formulations. Better yet, try one of the many primer + SPF products now on the market to get SPF protection with the added benefit of having your makeup last longer as well! Products such as the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen Primer is one that can be incorporated into your makeup routine.
With all of these steps, your makeup will go on smoothly and flawlessly, just like you. Just enhance your beautiful, natural, smooth skin with your favorite foundation and/or concealer & go!
A skincare regimen won’t only improve the look and longevity of makeup, but you’ll have a routine that will ensure beautiful skin even when the cosmetics come off!
