How to Transition Your Skincare This Autumn

How to Transition Your Skincare This Autumn

Are you ready to say goodbye to Summer? I know I am! I love Summer’s late night walks, loose flowy sundresses, bike rides, fireflies and beach days, but Autumn has always been my favorite season for its distinctively crisp air, changing leaves and overall romantic atmosphere.

However, don’t assume everything will be so easy breezy. This is time of year when our skin goes through transition, which means that your skin may be suffering from summer aftershocks, such as sun spots or enlarged pores, and is particularly prone to dryness and breakouts as the temperature drops.

Hence, it is in our skin’s best interest for us to make some subtle tweaks to our beauty rituals, so we are better prepared for colder months ahead! Below are bits of advice for building your perfect skincare routine for the seasonal change.

1. Switch Up Your Cleansing Routine

As you may already know, the most basic skincare step is cleansing. To keep your skin hydrated, you first need to find a fall-friendly cleansing product that is kind to dry skin and helps retain its moisture. Since our skin produces less oil during this season, you may want to stay away from foam cleansers, which tend to be a bit drying, and switch to milder products, such as cleansing oil or cream.

After dissolving makeup with the cleansing oil or cream of your choice, try applying cleansing water to a cotton pad and wipe across your face. It will cleanse your complexion without drying out the skin.

2. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate!

To give our skin a fresh start for the season, we need to slough off the old residue and bring out the smooth and refreshed skin underneath. This is the perfect time to introduce, if you haven’t already, a face or body exfoliation two or three times a week to remove summer’s marks on your skin and leave it looking polished.

Some people may think that exfoliation would exacerbate dryness, but it is, in fact, one of the best ways to treat dry, flaky skin as exfoliating removes the dead skin cells that trap oil and cause tiny, pimple-like bumps. It also helps to lift skin discoloration and transform skin from dull to dewy. For this reason, a well-formulated exfoliating peel is a must-have for your autumn skincare regimen!

We recommend our ‘Satin Bright Soft Water Peel for Face.’ This amazing lightweight water-based gel effectively and visibly sweeps away old skin cells without harsh acids, scrubs or enzymes. After cleansing your face and neck and patting skin lightly with a towel, massage the gel onto skin to release dead skin cells, then rinse thoroughly with water.

For scaly tough spots, especially the bottoms of your feet which will be tucked into boots and heels for months to come, grab our ‘Gentle Action Water Peel for Body’ and keep it in your shower. It will gently remove dead skin from body areas that require extra exfoliation and give your skin a flawless finish.

3. Ramp Up Hydration & Choose a Heavier Moisturizer

Brisk weather and occasionally biting wind means your skin needs an extra helping of hydration and a change of moisturizer. Do you want to keep your skin dewy and glowing throughout the autumn? Then you MUST hydrate and nourish your skin on a daily basis.

After cleansing your face, immediately wipe an alcohol-free toner over your face and apply a generous layer of serum or cream for added hydration. Also, it is the perfect time to introduce a heavier-duty moisturizer into your routine to prevent moisture loss and give your skin's surface extra protection.

4. Sunscreen is Still a Must

Sunscreen is not just for the beach season but an absolute necessity for our skin all year around! This may come as a surprise, but the UVA rays, which cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles, are known to be just as damaging in autumn as they are in summer. In other words, your skin still needs the same protection from aging ultraviolet rays in autumn!

Make sure to use a moisturizer with a minimum of SPF 15 every morning and reapply a facial sunscreen throughout the day as needed.

Regardless of seasons, we need to be attentive and pay attention to what our skin is telling us. Don't ignore your skin’s needs and look out for signs like dryness, increased breakouts and sensitivity as they may suggest that you may need to change your current skincare routine.

As you may have heard a thousand times already, beauty starts from within. Make sure to drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet. Try to exercise regularly and think positive. Most of all, let’s just enjoy this lovely season and shine like no other!

June
